Piano

Piano is for Life!!  Whether a student is beginning at age 6 or 86, the joy of music is the gift of a lifetime.

Training in piano is available for beginners through early advanced levels, ages 6 - adult.   The lessons are tailored to the needs and goals of the student.  Standard piano training books are used in addition to classical, pop and rock repertoire, as well as original compositions by Zoe Vandermeer written expressly for the student, whether it is a warm-up exercise, or a recital piece.  Students are encouraged to become involved in composing their own pieces.

Students also have the opportunity to register for the National Music Certificate Program provided by the Royal Colleges.  Each level in this program has a selection of pieces from which the student can choose, as well as musicianship/music theory goals.  At the completion of each year's program, the student performs for a panel of music professionals and is given helpful feedback, as well as a rating and certificate.  Please enquire for more information.

In learning piano, students learn:
     enjoyment of music!
hand-eye-body coordination which engages both the left and right brain
     how to read music
     how to learn music
     how to listen
     how to practice effectively
     how to play well
     musicianship skills
     performance skills

Piano for Singers
Singers are strongly encouraged to take piano lessons.  Singers learn how to:
look at music never seen before and identify the key and whether it is a good key for them
teach themselves how to sing a song they have never seen before
understand the chords of the song and how this can help them sing the melody better
     practice for better intonation

Some of the Benefits for Singers
These skills result in a longterm savings as singers will not have to hire other musicians to teach them a song.
The singer will feel more confident and prepared when working with others because of their deeper understanding of music.
The singer will be able to sightread, often a requirement for college entrance auditions and some competitions, and a very useful skill at the professional level when working with music directors and conductors.
Singers can expand their piano skills into songwriting, which can be taken a step further for those interested, in learning how to accompany their singing on piano.

Piano for Kids
What a great way for kids to become involved in music!  After learning the basics, kids can expand their piano skills into songwriting, playing in a band, accompanying the choirs at school, playing for musical theatre shows, composng piano music, enhancing their music technology skills with a real understanding of music and how it works.  It has been statistically proven for over ten years that kids who are engaged in piano or other musical instrument do better at math, english and science, and that their hand-eye-coordination is better, their overall learning skills better, their attention span and ability to focus is better.  A great opportunity!

Piano for Songwriters
Piano is an invaluable tool for songwriters.  Learn how to write well for the piano, learn how to play your own music, learn more about the musical relationship and balance between the piano or keyboard and voice in your writing styles.

Piano for Adults
So often I hear the story from adults - 'why didn't my parents make me continue with piano lessons when I was a kid?', or 'why didn't my parents enroll me in piano lessons?'
It is never too late to begin piano, and it is never too late to refresh and move forward with piano lessons, even if 50 years have gone by!
